Reinforcement-Driven Spread of Innovations and Fads

Por • 27 abr, 2011 • Category: sociologia

We propose kinetic models for the spread of permanent innovations and transient fads by the mechanism of social reinforcement. Each individual can be in one of M+1 states of awareness 0,1,2,…,M, with state M corresponding to adopting an innovation. An individual with awareness k1. The fraction of the population that remains clueless about a transient fad after it has come and gone changes discontinuously as a function of the fad abandonment rate lambda for M>1. The fad dies out completely in a time that varies non-monotonically with lambda.

On Order and Randomness: A View from the Edge of Chaos

Por • 27 abr, 2011 • Category: Leyes

The recognition of the agency of the knower has enormously enriched our understanding of knowledge production. There is a growing realization that what we know about how we know affects our interpretation of reality. This realization informs the perspective of this paper. As a case study, the paper looks at the problem of randomness vs. determinism. It argues that this problem is not intrinsic to nature but is rather a product of the epistemological approach that does not pay attention to the process of the construction of knowledge. In contrast to the current one-sided solutions of the problem that represent reality as either random or deterministic, this paper argues that reality is neither random nor deterministic. Neither randomness nor determinism exists on its own.

Locals indifferent to all-Chinese investments

Por • 26 abr, 2011 • Category: Internacionales

China’s investment in Libya was made chiefly by State-owned enterprises and followed a government-supported strategic integral mode. The all-in-one-service mode meant that all the services, including construction workers, cooks and doctors, were exported from China and backed by Chinese bank loans, with no use made of local labor or services. Even the nails came from China. The domestic circumstances in Libya might have contributed to the formation of China’s characteristic style of investment there. But the model of importing everything from China may face great challenges too.

How and why does statistical mechanics work

Por • 26 abr, 2011 • Category: Opinion

As the title says we want to answer the question; how and why does statistical mechanics work?. We review the role of chaos (classical and quantum) where it is important and where it is not important. We criticise the ideas of E. T. Jaynes who says that the ergodic problem is conceptual one and is related to the very concept of ensemble itself which is a by-product of frequency theory of probability, and the ergodic problem becomes irrelevant when the probabilities of various micro-states are interpreted with Laplace-Bernoulli theory of Probability (Bayesian viewpoint). In the end we critically review various quantum approaches (quantum-statistical typicality approaches) to the foundations of statistical mechanics.

Time of Philosophers, Time of Physicists, Time of Mathematicians

Is presentism compatible with relativity ? This question has been much debated since the argument first proposed by Rietdijk and Putnam. The goal of this text is to study the implications of relativity and quantum mechanics on presentism, possibilism, and eternalism. We put the emphasis on the implicit metaphysical preconceptions underlying each of these different approaches to the question of time. We show that there exists a unique version of presentism which is both non-trivial, in the sense that it does not reduce the present to a unique event, and compatible with special relativity and quantum mechanics: the one in which the present of an observer at a point is identified with the backward light cone of that point. However, this compatibility is achieved at the cost of a renouncement to the notion of an objective, observer-independent reality. We also argue that no non-trivial version of presentism survives in general relativity, except if some mechanism forbids the existence of closed timelike curves, in which case precisely one version of possibilism does survive.

Interstellar Predation Could Explain Fermi Paradox

Por • 23 abr, 2011 • Category: Ambiente

In a casual chat over lunch back in 1950, the Italian-American physicist Enrico Fermi posed a now famous question. If intelligent life has evolved many times in our galaxy and beyond, why do we see no sign of it?. Today, Adrian Kent at the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Canada, puts forward another possibility. His idea is that civilisations are common, that they have interacted many times in the past but end up competing for scarce resources. When that happens, the process of evolution, operating over vast time scales, ensures that the survivors learn to keep quiet.
