Computation of the Travelling Salesman Problem by a Shrinking Blob

Por • 25 mar, 2013 • Category: Opinion

The Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) is a well known and challenging combinatorial optimisation problem. Its computational intractability has attracted a number of heuristic approaches to generate satisfactory, if not optimal, candidate solutions. In this paper we demonstrate a simple unconventional computation method to approximate the Euclidean TSP using a virtual material approach. The method is notable for its simplicity and the spatially represented mechanical mode of its operation. We discuss similarities between this method and previously suggested models of human performance on the TSP and suggest possibilities for further improvement.

RadioAstron — a Telescope with a Size of 300 000 km: Main Parameters and First Observational Results

Por • 25 mar, 2013 • Category: Ciencia y tecnología

The Russian Academy of Sciences and Federal Space Agency, together with the participation of many international organizations, worked toward the launch of the RadioAstron orbiting space observatory with its onboard 10-m reflector radio telescope from the Baikonur cosmodrome on July 18, 2011. Objects to be studied include supermassive black holes, accretion disks, and relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei, stellar-mass black holes, neutron stars and hypothetical quark stars, regions of formation of stars and planetary systems in our and other galaxies, interplanetary and interstellar plasma, and the gravitational field of the Earth. The results of ground-based and inflight tests of the space radio telescope carried out in both autonomous and ground-space interferometric regimes are reported. The derived characteristics are in agreement with the main requirements of the project. The astrophysical science program has begun.

Title: Reduced products of UHF algebras under forcing axioms

Por • 25 mar, 2013 • Category: Crítica

If $A_n$ is a sequence of C*-algebras, then the C*-algebra $\prod A_n / \bigoplus A_n$ is called a reduced product. We prove, assuming Todorcevic’s Axiom and Martin’s Axiom, that every isomorphism between two reduced products of separable, unital UHF algebras must be definable in a strong sense. As a corollary we deduce that two such reduced products $\prod A_n / \bigoplus A_n$ and $\prod B_n / \bigoplus B_n$ are isomorphic if and only if, up to an almost-permutation of $\mathbb{N}$, $A_n$ is isomorphic to $B_n$.

Golden BRICS to steadily have bigger say

Por • 25 mar, 2013 • Category: Economía

BRICS Summit is held on March 26 to 27, after a breakthrough was delivered at the UN Climate Change Conference in 2011. It is widely expected that this summit will show the power and strength of the cooperation mechanism among emerging economies. Such perceptions are not unusual recently, since the BRICS countries have enjoyed rapid growth and become a significant force in addressing the international financial crisis, driving global growth, promoting global economic restructuring and improving global governance. Will the BRICS shine golden at this new event? The answer is yes, to some extent.

Heuristic Classification of Physical Theories based on Quantum Correlations

Por • 25 mar, 2013 • Category: Leyes

Taking quantum formalism as a point of reference and connection, we explore the various possibilities that arise in the construction of physical theories. Analyzing the distinct physical phenomena that each of them may describe, we introduce the different types of hidden variables theories that correspond to these physical phenomena. A hierarchical classification of the offered theories, based on the degree of correlation between dichotomic observables in bipartite systems, as quantified by a Bell type inequality, is finally proposed.

Positive Topological Quantum Field Theories

Por • 25 mar, 2013 • Category: Educacion

We propose a new notion of positivity for topological field theories (TFTs), based on S. Eilenberg’s concept of completeness for semirings. We show that a complete ground semiring, a system of fields on manifolds and a system of action functionals on these fields determine a positive TFT. The main feature of such a theory is a semiring-valued topologically invariant state sum that satisfies a gluing formula. The abstract framework has been carefully designed to cover a wide range of phenomena. For instance, we derive Polya’s counting theory in combinatorics from state sum identities in a suitable positive TFT. Several other concrete examples are discussed, among them Novikov signatures of fiber bundles over spacetimes and arithmetic functions in number theory. In the future, we will employ the framework presented here in constructing a new differential topological invariant that detects exotic smooth structures on spheres.

Quantifying Social Network Dynamics

Por • 25 mar, 2013 • Category: sociologia

The dynamic character of most social networks requires to model evolution of networks in order to enable complex analysis of theirs dynamics. The following paper focuses on the definition of differences between network snapshots by means of Graph Differential Tuple. These differences enable to calculate the diverse distance measures as well as to investigate the speed of changes. Four separate measures are suggested in the paper with experimental study on real social network data.
