String Theory – From Physics to Metaphysics

Por • 26 sep, 2014 • Category: Opinion

Currently, string theory represents the only advanced approach to a unification of all interactions, including gravity. In spite of the more than thirty years of its existence, the sequence of metamorphosis it ran through, and the ever more increasing number of involved physicists, until now, it did not make any empirically testable predictions. Because there are no empirical data incompatible with the quantum field theoretical standard model of elementary particle physics and with general relativity, the only motivations for string theory rest in the mutual incompatibility of the standard model and of general relativity as well as in the metaphysics of the unification program of physics, aimed at a final unified theory of all interactions including gravity. But actually, it is completely unknown which physically interpretable principles could form the basis of string theory. At the moment, »string theory» is no theory at all, but rather a labyrinthic structure of mathematical procedures and intuitions which get their justification from the fact that they, at least formally, reproduce general relativity and the standard model of elementary particle physics as low energy approximations.

Scientific Realism in the Age of String Theory

Por • 26 sep, 2014 • Category: Crítica

String theory currently is the only viable candidate for a unified description of all known natural forces. This article tries to demonstrate that the fundamental structural and methodological differences that set string theory apart from other physical theories have important philosophical consequences. Focusing on implications for the realism debate in philosophy of science, it is argued that both poles of that debate face new problems in the context of string theory.

Model Theories of Set Theories and Type Theory

Por • 26 sep, 2014 • Category: Educacion

This paper is divided into three parts. In the first part, we review the historical background of a system of logic devised by Henry S. Leonard to allow for reasoning using existence as a predicate. In the second part, we consider various directions in which his logic could be further developed, syntactically, semantically, and as an adjunct to quantifier elimination and set theory. In the third and final part, we develop proofs of some underlying results of his logic, using modern notation but retaining his axioms and rules of inference.

Time in Philosophy of Physics: The Central Issues

Por • 26 sep, 2014 • Category: Filosofía

The paper provides a survey of problems and debates about time and temporal directedness in theories of modern physics on an almost introductory level. We start from general notions of the metaphysics of time and then move on to special and general relativity theory, thermodynamics and quantum mechanics. The paper as well as its bibliography should be useful as an entry to further studies for anybody interested in issues of time in the philosophy of physics.

Educación en ruina

El problema no es la UCAB ni la educación privada; es toda la educación venezolana que está en ruinas, pues sus presupuestos son insuficientes y decrecientes.

Philosophical Theory-Construction and the Self-Image of Philosophy

Por • 24 sep, 2014 • Category: Filosofía

This article takes its point of departure in a criticism of the views on meta-philosophy of P.M.S. Hacker for being too dismissive of the possibility of philosophical theory-construction. But its real aim is to put forward an explanatory hypothesis for the lack of a body of established truths and universal research programs in philosophy along with the outline of a positive account of what philosophical theories are and of how to assess them. A corollary of the present account is that it allows us to account for the objective dimension of philosophical discourse without taking recourse to the problematic idea of there being worldly facts that function as truth-makers for philosophical claims

Degree-layer theory of network topology

Por • 24 sep, 2014 • Category: Educacion

The network topology can be described by the number of nodes and the interconnections among them. The degree of a node in a network is the number of connections it has to other nodes and the degree distribution is the probability distribution of these degrees over the whole network. Therefore, the degree is very important structural parameter of network topology. However, given the number of nodes and the degree of each node in a network, the topology of the network cannot be determined. Therefore, we propose the degree-layer theory of network topology to describe deeply the network topology. First, we propose the concept of degree-tree with the breadth-first search tree. The degrees of all nodes are layered and have a hierarchical structure. Second, the degree-layer theory is described in detail.
