Approximation of ruin probability and ruin time in discrete Brownian risk models

Por • 31 ene, 2020 • Category: Economía

We analyze the classical Brownian risk models discussing the approximation of ruin probabilities (classical, {gamma}-reflected, Parisian and cumulative Parisian) for the case that ruin can occur only on specific discrete grids. A practical and natural grid of points is for instance G(1) = {0,1,2,…}, which allows us to study the probability of the ruin on the first day, second day, and so one. For such a discrete setting, there are no explicit formulas for the ruin probabilities mentioned above. In this contribution we derive accurate approximations of ruin probabilities for uniform grids by letting the initial capital to grow to infinity.

Physical Reality and the Unobservables of Physical Nature

Por • 30 ene, 2020 • Category: Leyes

The fundamental physical theories that interpret and explain behaviour of matter in nature are dependent on several unobservables and insensibles in their construction. While a rigorous natural philosophy cannot take them for granted, there does not seem to be a way of avoiding such unobservables in our theories. While a program to banish all unobservables from physical theory is unlikely to succeed, and perhaps even unnecessary, they are both the strong and weak points of the theoretical descriptions of physical nature. Analyzing them for empirical and philosophical consistency and integrity is always a promising path towards a better theory.

The Theories of Relativity and Bergson’s Philosophy of Duration and Simultaneity During and After Einstein’s 1922 Visit to Paris

Por • 30 ene, 2020 • Category: Opinion

In 1922, Albert Einstein visited Paris and interacted extensively with an illustrious section of the French academia. In overfilled sessions at the Collége de France and the Sorbonne, Einstein explained his theories of relativity, and prominent physicists, mathematicians and philosophers listened, debated, questioned and explored facets of relativity. The 1922 visit had its echoes in the life and works of many who participated, particularly decisive for Einstein and the philosopher Henri Bergson. This essay examines that eventful visit, focusing on the physical and logical aspects of Bergson’s critique, with physics commentaries, linking prominent French physicists and mathematicians Langevin, Painlevé, Hadamard, Becquerel, Sagnac, and Kastler. I give particular attention to the logical and empirical accuracy of the physics issues involved, delineating Bergson’s exact reasoning for his philosophical enthusiasm in Einstein’s theory and for the ensuing critique. Bergson’s philosophical stand on duration and simultaneity is reassessed in the context of later developments in cosmological physics as well as the wealth of empirical data involving comparison of atomic clocks.

Piles of piles: An inter-country comparison of nuclear pile development during World War II

Por • 30 ene, 2020 • Category: Ciencia y tecnología

Between the time of the discovery of nuclear fission in early 1939 and the end of 1946, approximately 90 nuclear piles were constructed in six countries. These devices ranged from simple graphite columns containing neutron sources but no uranium to others as complex as the water-cooled 250-megawatt plutonium production reactors built at Hanford, Washington. This paper summarizes and compares the properties of these piles.

U.S. Demands Iraq Either Join U.S. War Against Iran or Be Destroyed

Por • 29 ene, 2020 • Category: Internacionales

U.S. officials have now made clear that if U.S. forces become removed from Iraq as Iraq’s Parliament unanimously demanded and Iraq’s Prime Minister affirmed on January 5th, then the U.S. will try to break Iraq up into separate Sunni and Shia nations, and will also definitely impose sanctions against Iraq or (if Iraq becomes successfully broken up) against the Shia-governed portion of Iraq, in order to destroy Iraq (or the Shiite regions in Iraq) totally.
